How can astrology help to demystify the world of relationships and dating?

Relationships are a universal theme as almost everybody, at some stage of life will have questions, confusion, and doubts about who is their soulmate, twin flame, ideal match, or plain old Mr Right? Not forgetting the other big conundrum, who should they really avoid at all costs? The wonderful thing about astrology is it can give one immediate insight, guidance, and alert us to the pitfalls of various sun sign combinations in terms of dating and relationships.

What’s beautiful about astrology is that you only need to know your sun or zodiac sign and your partner’s to gain a vast amount of information and perspectives on romance, sexual compatibility, communication, and love languages between the different star signs, or, of course, the same sign if you are dating the same zodiac sign as yourself. So that is the bonus of Sun sign or star sign compatibility analysis. However, for those who are craving a deeper dive into the intricate revelations of the astrology charts, you can also use your moon and Venus sign in order to uncover multiple layers of relationship analysis and a whole new vista of information.

What you gain when you understand the moon sign, which signifies one’s emotional nature, what one might need to feel secure, and one’s reflex reactions, is a context for the emotional, subconscious or irrational side of the relationship.

Then there’s also the interplay of one’s Venus sign with a partner’s Mars sign, which helps us understand sexual compatibility and whether there’s chemistry and arousal between each other, or whether, perhaps, it’s a relationship that is more platonic.

If you know your birth time, this is even more enlightening, because then one can uncover your full horoscope with ascendant, your midheaven, and what we call the “angles” of the chart. When a partner’s personal planets (i.e. the sun, moon, Venus, Mars and Mercury) trigger personal planets and angles, the relationship is even more cosmically connected and compatible.

What’s also exciting in knowing one’s ascendant is we have access to the degree of seventh house, which rules relationships, and if a partner’s planets fall in your seventh house it gives added impetus to the match.

What influences zodiac compatibility?

The first thing one would look at when understanding the potential of a love match and zodiac sign compatibility, is examining the natures of one’s sun sign. The first clues we get are in the modalities and the elements. For example, fire signs are naturally excitable and are attracted to each other, and romance can be rather spontaneous and fast paced. In a similar way, earth, water, and air signs attract each other, but each relationship will have distinct flavour. However, sometimes the more productive, long-lasting relationships are between the same modalities for example the cardinal signs, i.e. Aries, Cancer, Capricorn, and Libra, the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius), or the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces). So, as an astrologer, I’m always going to the triplicities AKA modalities to find the first indication of whether this is a good match.

If one knows their rising sign (provided you know your birth time), then as an astrologer I will immediately have a look at the seventh house to find out if a partner’s planets are in the seventh house, or importantly, on the seventh house cusp. I will also look to the ruler of your seventh house to see if there is an interplay with that planet and your partner’s seventh house ruler.

Moon signs are vital, as coinciding sun and moon signs tend to suggest a strong bond, a lasting connection and couples that are good marriage material. Sun in one chart conjunct, trine or sextile Moon in the partner’s chart demonstrates the couple have that emotional and family values compatibility, and additionally an innate understanding that defies words.

I would also seek to see the interplay between Venus and the sun in the couples’ astrology charts to find out how harmonious this relationship is. Positive aspects between the Venus and Venus in each chart, or Venus–sun and Venus–moon, mean that this is a couple who are going to feel comfortable together, and are willing to cherish, cooperate and value each other.

The art of synastry is a complex tool where every point, angle, and planet in each chart is lined up against the other to find out whether there is harmony or red flags. There are key aspects that astrologers look out for to find out if the love match is possibly one where there’s an imbalance of control, lack of trust, infidelity, or whether it is one of great chemistry or spiritual and personal awakening.

Polarity indicates signs that are opposite, or at 180 degrees, to each other. For example, Aries to Libra, Taurus to Scorpio, Cancer to Capricorn. This is often a key facet in terms of astrology, as opposites attract, and it is very likely that zodiac signs that form a polarity are going to have a natural attraction because they are foils for each other’s personality.

Sun signs in the same modality or triplicity naturally align with each other because their instinctive reactions and approaches to life tend to be similar, and therefore there is likely to be a lot of respect. When two signs are in neither the same element — be it earth, water, air, or fire — nor the same modality (i.e. cardinal, fixed, mutable), you know immediately that there are going to be some hurdles, as they lack a basic level of understanding, making harmony more challenging.

Love Compatibility by Zodiac Sign

Aries Compatibility

Aries are known as being highly energetic, assertive people with a big love of life and an attacking personality. In terms of relationships, they won’t let life pass them by. Thus they need a partner who is ambitious, supportive, enthusiastic, who can match their energy but also provide them with positive feedback and reassurance, because they have a need for self-improvement and to be on a personal journey.

Aries is a romantic idealist who needs a partner who believes in love and isn’t jaded or cynical.

Aries thrive on family life and want to own the home of their dreams, they need a life partner with worldly ambition but old fashioned family values too. And let’s not forget honesty as Aries have no time to bear around the bush.

Aries match superbly with Libra and Capricorn, but Leo and Taurus can also be a very fruitful match. Aries craves a spiritual experience through love as they believe in the highest expression of love, which makes Pisces an option too. Aries get on very well with other Aries.

Taurus Compatibility

Taurus are known for being stubborn, but in truth they have a determined, resilient nature. They tend to seek security, they want financial stability, and they can be more conservative and risk-averse. Therefore, they are looking for a partner who is intensely loyal, with whom they can have a deep and often sensually exciting relationship.

For Taurus, both the physical and communicative side of the relationship is very important, and so a partner must be able to constantly create an environment that is conducive to emotional sharing, interesting conversation, and which cultivates little doubt in terms of the intensity of feeling for both.

Taurus get on exceedingly well with Scorpio and Leo, and often they have a brilliant communicative relationship with Aquarius. Other suitable matches for Taurus are Libra, being a Venus-ruled sign, and Gemini, who are equally curious and social.

Gemini Compatibility

Gemini are the party animals of the zodiac, and I say that because they are sociable, vivacious, and bubbly. They enjoy the stimulation of other people, and they tend to have an insatiable curiosity.

They thrive in business and are very engaged in the world around them. What Gemini are looking for is a free-spirited partner who has a similar zest for life and who is a good conversationalist with a great sense of humour. Gemini dislike confrontation, and they want to analyse emotions and talk through their problems, so they need a rational partner who is not overly emotional and moody, which can be problematic for them.

Gemini match brilliantly with Sagittarius and also Pisces. Other rather helpful matches for Gemini are Libra and Taurus. Gemini can also get on well with Virgo, as both are ruled by Mercury, and therefore there’s a lot of intellectual stimulation as well as this analytical approach to life.

Cancer Compatibility

Cancer, ruled by the Moon, is known as a highly nurturing, intuitive sign, but also a sign of money and family. Cancer requires a partner who is an anchor, someone who is a protective force, but also an ambitious partner who wants to excel in life and to have a prosperous family and home life.

Cancer has an adventurous side to them, so they can’t have a partner who is too rooted or too easily lulled into passivity. Cancer is deeply emotional and intuitive — they pick up on a person’s inner thoughts, and therefore they require a partner who has an honest and conscientious attitude to relationships.

Cancer shy away from anything that’s too abrasive and definitely cannot handle a partner that’s emotionally cold. Cancer match well with other Cancer and Capricorn, as they both have that instinct for making money, creating security, and protecting each other. Cancer also may have positive relations with Libra, often Aries, and also Pisces. In many cases, their match with Scorpio can be quite transformative.

Leo Compatibility

Leo is a bold and flamboyant sign, although I must admit many Leos are often shy, but they all have this creative instinct, they all have an inner leader waiting to emerge. Leo likes to feel that life has unlimited potential, and they have a certain ‘unquashable’ optimism and can be very competitive.

They are a sign that is loving and very romantic. They are drawn to people who are a little bit unusual, they like partners that offer them something quirky and eccentric, as they have an eye for drawing out the talent in others. They want to be put on a pedestal somewhat, and they will prefer a partner who doesn’t stand in their light and someone who will show a lot of curiosity and interest in their goals.

Leo often likes a partner who they can encourage — they enjoy being a champion for the underdog, and they can revel in being protective over a partner as well, as they have a nurturing side. Leo certainly needs someone who has imagination and can match their appetite for romance.

Excellent partners for Leo are Aquarius, Pisces, Taurus, and often Scorpio, although there is a kind of complicated karma with Leo and Scorpio, but it doesn’t mean the relationship can’t be vibrant.

Virgo Compatibility

Virgo is a sign known for its intellectual and analytical ability. Virgos are, of course, the perfectionists of the zodiac, and they don’t suffer fools gladly. They are deliberate, diligent, and also great storytellers and raconteurs. They have a wonderful way with words. What Virgo hates are liars and people who are not authentic. What Virgo are looking for in a partner is someone who offers them nurturing relief and unconditional love.

Virgo can be slightly self-critical, so they need a partner who can show them the higher aspects of love and with whom they can enter a dreamy romance and feel totally lost in a world of love.

Virgo gravitates to Pisces and Gemini, particularly because these are non-confrontational signs, and both enjoy humour, wit, and storytelling as well. Virgo have an adventurous side, which means Sagittarius can be an inspiring partner. Strangely enough, Aries can be a sign that has a hint of danger, yet also attraction for Virgo.

Libra Compatibility

Libra is the sign of marriage and love. Libra rarely go long without finding a life partner. Even when they are single, they prefer to have roommates. Libras are team players who like to do everything in life with a partner, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have a big desire to lead and an ambitious streak.

While they like to work in a team, they don’t want anyone to cramp their style. As Libra are naturally a little bit indecisive and sometimes too compromising, they enjoy a partner who knows their own mind and is quite headstrong.

Libra have a large appetite for love and life, and they need warm, wholehearted responses from a partner. They cannot stand anyone who’s cool and aloof. Sometimes they need a dose of reality in love, and so they don’t want someone too idealistic. Ideal partners for Libra are Aries, Cancer, Scorpio, and Taurus. Libra want loyalty and dedication in love and are looking for signs that aren’t afraid to show how they feel.

Scorpio Compatibility

Scorpio are known for being intense, dramatic, and quite passionate. They are a very sexual sign, but they can also be mysterious and a dark horse. Many Scorpios have their walls up; they are scared of showing their Achilles’ heel, and they will put a partner through the paces. So, if you want to be successful with Scorpio, you have to have patience, resilience, and you really have to prove yourself. Respect has to be earned with a Scorpio, but once they decide to lavish their love on you, then you are going to be privileged, because no one loves and is dedicated and loyal like a Scorpio.

Signs that are a great match for Scorpio are Taurus, because they are loving, diplomatic, and have a kind side to them. Scorpio are also attracted to Leos — they enjoy the warmth and the positivity that Leo brings, along with the fact that Leo has slightly more overt confidence and a  flamboyant nature, which appeals to the Scorpio desire for theatre. Scorpio can also be aroused by the Pisces nature, because Pisces can also be mysterious, deeply emotional, and creative, which is very exciting for Scorpio. In some cases, they are ‘fatally’ attracted to Aquarius, with whom they may have a rollercoaster relationship.

Sagittarius Compatibility

Sagittarius are happy-go-lucky, adventure seekers and free spirits. They are the most unlikely sign to want to settle down, and they are hard to please in love because they need a constant source of adventure and stimulation, simply because they easily get bored. They need a partner who’s always ringing the changes, keeping them on their toes, and delivering a smorgasbord of surprises.

What Sagittarius also needs is to have their curiosity piqued, as they are intensely curious and seeking wisdom. Sagittarius also have a philosophical or religious side to their nature, and so it often helps if their partner has a belief system or a great desire to increase their personal awareness or grow, because that sense of being on a journey with a partner is very, very stimulating.

Sagittarius thrive with Gemini, simply because Geminis are quirky, unpredictable, and highly communicative. They also find a lot of intrigue with Virgo, who provides that sort of analytical feedback they desire, along with a sense of adventure. Pisces can be a good match, and, intriguingly, Scorpio can be rather a fantastic sexual match for Sagittarius, as they are very hard to figure out, and Sagittarius never quite know where they stand, which provides a lot of spice to the relationship.

Capricorn Compatibility

Capricorn are known as the bankers of the zodiac, simply because they’re good with money, business, and they’re very ambitious. However, there’s so much more to the Capricorn nature, in fact, they are very sensual, sexy, and they have an awful lot to offer a partner in terms of giving them attention, and being a responsible and diligent partner who is also extremely reassuring and stoic.

Capricorn is a trier; they work hard at things, and they need to have a partner who wants to work at a relationship. If there’s anything that Capricorn can’t stand, it’s a quitter. So Capricorn are looking for signs who are dedicated and have a serious side to them, although a sense of humour is also very important, as well as some spontaneity.

Capricorn match well with Aries, because they enjoy their authority and fiery nature, as it gives them confidence. Capricorn are also likely to fall deeply in love with Cancer, because there’s so much unspoken understanding due to Cancer’s intuition. Capricorn gets on rather well with Libra, as their ruler Saturn is exalted in Libra. Other strong matches for Capricorn are Taurus and Scorpio, because of the determined and definite natures of those signs.

Aquarius Compatibility

Aquarius is known as the maverick and rebel of the zodiac. However, there’s also a deeply sensitive, romantic side to Aquarius. Aquarius needs a partner who is both unorthodox and open-minded, but who is also deeply loving, caring, and kind-hearted. Aquarius finds compassion and tolerance very important in a relationship, so they cannot stand anyone who has a closed mind or who is particularly set in their ways.

Aquarius also likes drama and colour in love, so they enjoy a creative partner who is very self-expressive, who can be headstrong, and who knows who they are and what they want in life.

Aquarius loves a personality that is flamboyant and defined. Aquarius naturally gravitates to Leo, because they love the noble, loving, and theatrical side of Leo. They also enjoy the passion and drama of Scorpio, and they appreciate the kindness, stability, and creativity of Taurus. Virgo and Cancer can be intriguing combinations for Aquarius. They can’t exactly figure them out, and they may not always feel secure with them, but it’s an interesting match. Aquarius match well with other Aquarius too.

Pisces Compatibility

Pisces is the sign associated with the ocean. The ocean is beautiful, but ever-changing, and it has its depths that are unexplored. Pisces can be a dark horse, a sign that no one ever truly has the measure of. Pisces tend to give a lot; they have a compassionate nature, they give to others through their creativity and their artistic ability, or through their kindness.

Pisces are also very adaptable, but there are so many facets to their personality that they can be hard to understand, which does mean that relationships with Pisces are quite fluid and unpredictable.

Pisces match well with signs that are mutable, for example Gemini, Sagittarius, and Virgo, because these signs innately enjoy change and adjust to it seamlessly. Pisces also want an adventurous partner who has traits Pisces don’t have, for example being more down to earth, better at dealing with real life, and possibly even more assertive and confrontational. They can also be drawn to personalities like Aries and also Leo, because they love the fire that is a great antidote to their slightly more passive and yielding nature.

Beyond the Sun Sign

Now, while the Sun sign is vitally important and can give us an immediate read on the likely zodiac compatibility and how the relationship will unfold, there are, of course, many other important elements that an astrologer needs to look at. Once a natal chart is constructed with the time, place, and date of birth, we can look at the Venus sign to understand the love language — how a person expresses their creativity in love, what are the most important values that someone is looking for in another partner, and what makes them feel most loved and appreciated.

The Mars energy is all about sexual expression — the kind of things that turn you on, get you excited, and keep the adrenaline flowing. Once we know the Mars sign, we understand a lot about the sexual drives and how a person expresses their sexuality. When we compare Venus and Mars positions in the chart, we understand if there’s natural chemistry, or whether the sexual side of the love match is not really going to take off.

Synastry, as a tool, is a complex art of interpreting each planet and angle’s relationship to each other, and finding out whether these will inhibit or stimulate the relationship. In some cases, planets are very active at the get-go, meaning a relationship starts well but can fizzle out. Other planets may indicate a relationship the match is possibly more platonic. Some planetary connections may indicate a relationship with deep levels of karma, making it more complicated but ultimately much more rewarding and fulfilling.

What’s important, however, is to understand that astrology is a guide to the various challenges, strengths, and weaknesses of a relationship. There’s no such thing as a love combination that’s going to be entirely plain sailing — in other words, 100% green light — and there’s also no such thing as a relationship that is “dead in the water.” All relationships have aspects where there’s the potential for rewarding togetherness, harmony, enjoyment, or sexual excitement, and all relationships have areas where there are disagreements, clashes, frayed nerves, or the potential for control or even deception. It’s a matter of understanding the flow of the relationship and where the most predominant influences are, to understand ultimately whether it has a greater or lesser likelihood of success, or to alert you to the problems, as forewarned is forearmed.

FAQ

What is zodiac compatibility based on?

At the most fundamental level, zodiac compatibility is based on one’s Sun sign, which is very handy as everyone knows what Sun sign they are, and it’s very easy to find out a potential partner’s Sun sign, either on a dating app or by asking them. This can give you a wealth of immediate information, even if you don’t yet know another person’s exact birthday and birth time. Zodiac or star sign (Sun sign) compatibility is based on the intrinsic characteristics, the nature, desires, and instincts of your Sun sign as related to another Sun sign — or indeed the same Sun sign if you’re dating someone with the same star sign.

Which zodiac signs go well together?

If you want a handy and simplified guide, I would say that cardinal signs match with each other, fixed signs match with each other, and mutable signs match with each other. That is the most foolproof rule of thumb you can go with without knowing any more, and it’s based on empirical evidence, because in my experience as an astrologer, these are the most basic points of compatibility. Obviously, there are many other ways signs can be attracted and work together.

Can incompatible zodiac signs work out?

There’s no such thing as a zero possibility of any Sun sign combination succeeding. Some signs are more compatible than others, but even if your Sun or star signs are incompatible, you may have a Moon in your partner’s sign, or vice versa. You may find that your Ascendant sign is very compatible with your partner’s sign, or vice versa. There are many factors that can supersede the lack of compatibility between Sun signs — Ascendant and Moon sign compatibility being the foremost.

Is Sun sign compatibility accurate?

The most accurate way of measuring compatibility is with two charts, where you have the time, place, and date of birth, because then one can do a full analysis of every planet and angle with respect to each other, which would give a wealth of information. But, given that in the real world the information people are going to have at hand is their Sun sign, this gives a ton of information but cannot be 100% accurate, because it is not the full picture. So, it is extremely helpful and illustrative, but cannot be accurate 100%.

What is the difference between Sun, Moon, and Rising sign in relationships?

The Sun sign is our basic character traits, the direction in which we are moving, our fundamental life force, and it represents our core personality. The Moon sign represents our emotional reactions; it reveals a lot about our upbringing, past experiences we had, any emotional scars we may have, and what makes us feel most welcome and rewarded in relationships. It sometimes influences attitudes to family life and children.

The Rising or Ascendant sign is how we present to the world. It is the mask we wear, the way we like to portray ourselves, what we want people to think of us, the image people recognize us for, and it often represents how we enjoy making new starts in relationships. So, it’s strongly connected with our outer personality, and it can reflect more obvious traits.

Does zodiac compatibility apply to friendships or only love?

Zodiac compatibility can be universally applied. It can be applied to friendships, parent–child relationships, same-sex relationships, or even relationships between colleagues — or someone and their boss or employee. It is a wonderful tool for describing the dynamics between all sorts of different people.
